The word "abseiling" threw me for a moment. It made perfect sense as German (literally, "downroping"), but I hadn't realized it was an English word. It's in my dictionary, though.

Yes, its been in pretty widespread use for quite a while, at least over here. Dictionary suggests 1930-35.

Hadn't twigged it was borrowed from the German, though I suppose obvious as soon as one thinks about it!
